Silverton Siege<\/a>\u00a0is a 2022\u00a0South African<\/a>\u00a0movie based on real-life events and history in Silverton, Pretoria, in 1980.<\/span> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An original story captivating action-thriller, the history between the European countries that colonized South Africa and the fight for independence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fights would have been the release of Nelson Mandela and the nation’s freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Silverton Siege…<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a fight for freedom, Calvin Khumalo and his comrades grew up in apartheid South Africa (the most unequal society). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They joined the liberation movement and followed on June 16 uprisings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main objective was to “make the country ungovernable.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They chose violence with no civilian casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They set up a plan to take oil, and power from the seahorse oil depot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On that day, they were ready on the bus waiting for their driver to bring in the vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unknowingly to them, it was a setup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin realized that an informant<\/a> sabotaged their plan. They entered the bus and speed off in a haste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cops chased after them, and they had a car accident, which caused the death of Masego (a comrade).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terra was in pain as Masego was her love; she couldn’t leave him behind, but Calvin dragged her along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ran through a tunnel and ended up in the streets, exchanging gunshots with the cops while running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aldo almost got caught, but Calvin and Terra had his back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ran, but found no escape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cops surrounded them, they had no choice but to enter the nearest building which was the bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the bank…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There was no way out except for the front door, and the cops were waiting outside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They refused to surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, they kept hostages and demanded what they wanted: “Freedom.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a safe bargain, they got a helicopter to leave the bank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cops set them up by putting a pilot with tags to know their location and hear their discussion; they felt betrayed and went back inside the bank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confused by the events, they needed to know who betrayed them and why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin questioned the pilot to know who the informant was but got no details. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aldo (a comrade) talks with Calvin and blames it on their dead member, Masego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During an interaction with a hostage, Calvin mentioned Mandela and got an idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin had always looked up to Mandela because he was fighting for justice and freedom of rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterward, he planned and decided to strike another deal with the cops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aldo and Terra doubted the plan, fearing it might fail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite their fear, they trusted their leader and believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this deal, they wanted the immediate release of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, all charges dropped, and a presidential pardon from the prime minister. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin gave the cops one hour to deliver and release in full public view before they surrendered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of the cop (Captain Langerman) said it was a tall order, and Calvin asked him, “What is the price for freedom?”?.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For freedom, the price is everything and anything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, they gathered a huge part of the money and burned it outside, sending a message to the world, “Free Nelson Mandela!” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Society, in response, started screaming, “Power to the People.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin said a quote from Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why he believed in his movement to free him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, it is interesting how they communicate in different languages: Afrikaans, Zulu, English, and Sotho. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This movie showed various cultures, tribes, and people coming from other parts of the world or society in South Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The request for food and water from the bank became serious, so Calvin had to ask the cops to supply it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was at that moment that Aldo had an altercation with the pilot because he threatened to touch Aldo’s family, so Aldo killed him and made it look like self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, there was a supply of food and water for the hostages, and Calvin released two hostages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He burned more money and waited for the request to be granted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Captain Langerman handed a letter to Calvin that declared Mandela’s release and a pardon from the prime minister, but they aren’t sure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Langerman needs verification that the hostages are safe and alive, so they let him into the bank to check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disloyalty…<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

He saw everyone but insisted on taking the Minister’s daughter (Christine), but she refused to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything was okay until Terra (a comrade) found out that the captain’s name was Langerman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aside from Calvin, it was only Aldo who knew that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In no time, she realized that it was Aldo who sold them out. Aldo betrayed them, and Terra shot him dead rather than let him explain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin was certain the letter was all a lie and asked Langerman to leave. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Langerman was certain of what Calvin Khumalo was doing and told the officials, “Calvin is fighting for justice<\/a> and surely don’t want to lose more people”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christine comforted Calvin and listened to him. Calvin poured out his pain and frustration to her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They went out of the bank, and she told the cops the message Calvin and his comrades were sending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She urged her father to do something about the situation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a heated moment, she smiled and shouted, “Free him, Free Nelson Mandela!<\/strong>“.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, a sniper<\/a> fired at her and she died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Devastated by what happened, they realized that there was no safety in society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some disguised as white but were black appreciated their culture more and understood the fight that the trios were undergoing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin, heartbroken, tells a story about his childhood, how bad it was, how the police treated them, and what happened to his parents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of these led to him choosing to join the liberation movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of what’s going on, Langerman calls to tell Calvin that things are getting out of control and that the officials will storm their way into the bank with the SWAT team<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calvin releases the hostages to go, and the shot out begins and ends with Calvin and Terra’s gunshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore,\u00a0Nelson Mandela<\/a>\u00a0was released on 11 February 1990,\u00a0<\/span>and he became South Africa’s first black president <\/strong>in 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
